Joshua FOO
Associate Professor (Inamori Frontier Program)
Specialized Fields
Quantum Optics, Quantum Field Theory, Quantum Foundations
In my research, I study the foundations of quantum theory and gravity usingthe tools of atomic physics and quantum optics. I am particularly interested in developing newproposals for testing the interplay between quantum mechanics and spacetime physics withemerging quantum technologies. Some of my recent research directions include probing realistinterpretations of quantum theory with relativistic photons, proposing experiments to testquantum features of time dilation in atomic clocks, and analyzing quantum-gravitational eff ects inlow-energy systems.

Message

As an Inamori faculty member, I hope to contribute to the growth of the scientifi c,research, and education culture of Kyushu University. At the same time, I aspire to form new cross-cultural collaborations within the physics department, the newly established "Quantum andSpacetime Research Institute", and within the Japanese scientifi c community more broadly. Thegenerous support provided by the Inamori program provides an ideal environment for me toestablish a vibrant research group working on fundamental questions at the intersection ofquantum theory and spacetime physics. Although I am a theorist, I hope to work closely withexperimentalists at Kyushu University and beyond to bring new tests of the quantum aspects oftime, gravity, and relativity to life.
