Specialized Fields
Geopolitics, cultural politics, political economy, social movements, literature, tourism
Trained as a geographer, my research traverses a wide range of disciplines. I have examined the geopolitics of tourism between Taiwan and China, as well as the practice and aesthetics of social movements in East Asia. Most of my writing has been based on action research and fieldwork, including ethnography and interviews. I have also conducted extensive work on Taiwanese literature in translation. My publications include the monograph, One China, Many Taiwans (Cornell University Press, 2023).

Message

My work is generally concerned with the culture and politics of territory, social movements, and place-making in East Asia. At Kyushu University, I first intend to complete two book projects--the first on ecology and literature (forthcoming with Columbia University Press), and the second on the aesthetics and economics of cultural cooperation and competition, especially between Japan, China, Taiwan, and the US, seen through the lens of tech industry event production. While completing these projects, I will initiate an in-depth examination of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation's investments in Kyushu. As the fate of the global economy becomes increasingly tied to this crucial industry, my study will delve in real-time into the geoeconomic, geopolitical, and urban planning aspects of this development and its broader impacts on the political and cultural economy of the region.

Liberated from disciplinary and areal silos, the Inamori FP position provides my work the space, time, flexibility, and resources to jump scales from the regional to the global.
